Zim: Delta brings back the old beer brand

The country's beverages group, Delta Corporation, has brought back the Chibuku “shake-shake” brand of opaque beer which had been abandoned in 1991 with the introduction of the “scud” brand.

Scud had been introduced soon after the Persian Gulf War, which popularised scud missiles when allied forces launched attacks on the late Saddam Hussein's Iraq.

But so popular had been the shake-shake brand that ZANU PF had built its head office - also called the “shake-shake” building, to resemble the container of the beer. Some suggest that this is what had prompted Delta to pull the brand from the market.

Now, Delta has re-launched the shake-shake brand eighteen years later, taking the market by storm. A reveller in downtown Mbare, some five kilometres from Harare's CBD, described the beer as “more tasty” compared with the scud, saying it was being preferred by most revellers because the containers were fresh and not reused.

Delta's brand manager Yvonne Musoko has said there is a lot of excitement around the return of the shake-shake which has been greatly welcomed by opaque beer lovers.

The scud will remain on the market, reinforcing the company's 90% share of the sorghum based beer market.
