The ninth Cape Town International Summer Music Festival programme

The CPO's principal guest conductor Martin Panteleev will be on the podium for all four concerts of the ninth Cape Town International Summer Music Festival, as well as the open-air Kirstenbosch Festival Concert on 1 February, 2015, at 5.30pm. The festival runs from 22 January to 12 February, with all concerts in the City Hall at 8pm.

The festival opens on 22 January, with the Canadian pianist Stewart Goodyear in the Piano Concerto no 3 by Rachmaninov. Other works on the programme are Francesca da Rimini by Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky's Rite of Spring. On 29 January, pianist Derek Han will perform the Piano Concerto no 3 by Beethoven, while the CPO will play the overture to Wagner's opera Tannhaüser, and the Symphony no 2 by Brahms.

On 5 February, the Chinese-Canadian violinist Yi-Jia Susanne Hou will perform the delightful Butterfly Lover's Concerto by Chen/He, with the CPO playing the overture to Idomeneo by Mozart and Mahler Symphony no 5 in C-sharp minor.

The final concert on 12 February will feature clarinettist Maria du Toit in the Françaix Clarinet Concerto. The all-French programme will also include Milhaud le boeuf le toit, Debussy Prelude á L'après d'un faune and Ravel Ma Mère l'Oye (Mother Goose). (Maria du Toit will also perform the Mozart Clarinet Concerto in the Kirstenbosch Festival Concert.)

James Galway (flute) appears with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra on 11 February. This is not part of the CPO subscription season and tickets are from Computicket.

Concerts on 22 January and 5 February will be preceded by a Rise cocktail curtain raiser at 7pm linked to the night's programmes.
