#TEDTuesdays watch party: Screens & Scenes - reviving township cinema
This event is part of a monthly series hosted by TEDxYouth@CapeTown and TEDxCapeTown, in collaboration with Workshop17 our venue partner, where we screen impactful local TEDx talks and engage in deep, meaningful dialogue with the people behind them.
Join us for our 2nd event as part of the #TEDTuesdays TEDx watch party series, where we dive into thought-provoking topics followed by a live Q&A with the speaker(s).
On 26 August, the #TEDTuesday session titled, "Screens & Scenes - reviving township cinema" features the screening of the TEDx talk, “Bringing township cinema back through sustainability“ by Ziganekozihle Makhetha, and a moderated panel, and open discussion with guests.
Event theme: Sustainable storytelling & cultural revival
TEDx speaker, Ziganekozihle Makhetha brings township cinema back to life, not just as entertainment, but as a force for cultural restoration, youth empowerment, and community cohesion.
This conversation focuses on access, heritage, and how sustainable infrastructure can amplify authentic African stories.
Panel includes:
- Mbali Mashaba, a South African Creative Researcher, Film director and Film curator. 2025 Mail & Guardian's 200 Young South Africans making a significant impact in the Film and Media category.
- Rowan Pybus, Co-Founder and Creative Director at Sunshine Cinema, Africa's first solar powered cinema network run by young people that #SparkConversation
