Top five SA spots to explore for tourism month

Tourism month is celebrated annually in September with the aim to encourage local travellers to explore their own country and increase awareness of the affordable, world-class attractions available to them.

The Mother City

“With Cape Town’s long history of being listed amongst the word’s must-visit destinations, all South Africans should make the pilgrimage to the Mother City at least once in their lives,” says Grant Sandham, group sales and marketing manager at Premier Hotels & Resorts. “Here, not only can they enjoy popular attractions like heading up Table Mountain, touring Robben Island and taking a tasting trip through the winelands but also explore lesser-known delights like tucking into a braai at Mzoli’s in Gugulethu, going on a Cape Malay Cooking Safari in the Bo-Kaap and strolling along the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens’ Boomslang – a treetop canopy walkway.”

Tourism jewel, Kruger National Park

“Another one of South Africa’s crowning tourism jewels is the Kruger National Park,” adds Sandham. “Situated in Mpumalanga, the province also contains other natural attractions like the Blyde River Canyon and Sabie Waterfalls as well as the historic Pilgrim’s Rest."

History rich Pretoria

“While not traditionally a tourist destination, Pretoria is a sight to behold in spring when the Jacarandas turn the city purple,” says Sandham. “As one of South Africa’s capital cities, it’s not short on historical attractions such as the Union Buildings, Voortrekker Monument and Kruger House Museum. Diagonally opposite the Union Buildings, Premier Hotel Pretoria offers spectacular views of the Jacaranda City.”

Unspoiled Richard's Bay

He continues “Richard’s Bay offers visitors entrance into Zululand, a land of exquisite beauty with a coastline of unspoiled beaches stretching 350km from the mouth of the Tugela River to the Mozambique border and incorporating the largest estuarine system in Southern Africa.”

The best of beach and bush in Eastern Cape

“Offering the best of both beach and bush is the Eastern Cape. These attractions are easily accessed from Mpongo Private Game Reserve with its variety of African wildlife, rolling hills, river valleys and lush surroundings,” shares Sandham.
