Job description
Role and responsibilities: The Dean will lead the campus within the broad parameters of the Institution’s strategic directions, in accordance with its regional context and mission, as well as within the guidelines of national policies. The school leadership team under the Dean’s direction has overarching responsibility for:
Educational standardsIn consultation with the Education Value Assurance Department (EVA) and Registry, will:
- ensure the effective implementation of the teaching and learning policies and strategy of the institution.
Campus growth and developmentWith the support of the relevant support service departments, is responsible for:
- The planning of infrastructure and assets for campus growth within the framework of the strategic vision of the Institution, including the establishment of new courses.
Campus managementWith the support of the registry and institutional senate, responsible for:
- Regular reporting on the academic and other activities of the campus and staff and the ways in which finances and facilities are managed.
With the support of the head of finance, is responsible for:
- The effective and transparent management of the finances of the campus, including: drawing up, managing and controlling the annual financial plan for the campus.
In consultation with the head of finance and human resources is responsible for:
- The effective implementation of the human resources plan and strategy of the institution with a view to maintaining accepted performance standards, and fostering and maintaining sound personal and professional relationships among the members of staff and between staff and AFDA clients. and promoting employment equity and the goals associated with it.
Campus promotionWith the support of the relevant support service environments, is responsible for the management of, or the execution of, actions and processes with regards to:
- Recruiting and retaining new students in accordance with the enrolment planning
- Welcoming new students and providing orientation with regard to the activities of the campus;
- Promoting successful study and value systems of the Institution;
- Creating and maintaining effective communication with students
Strategic alliancesThe dean will represent the campus, and the Institution in the external community by developing, promoting and maintaining links with the appropriate industry, government and professional bodies and seeking support and resources for the campus.
A programme coordinator is required to:- Have a comprehensive knowledge of the programme to ensure that the programme is maintained throughout the delivery.
- Ensure that all prescribed curriculum and pedagogical strategies are delivered.
- Ensure that the prescribed programme timetable and class attendance is maintained.
- Ensure that the prescribed programme assignments and assessments are completed.
- Ensure that all prescribed term projects have been completed and that the associated facilities; equipment and budgets to achieve this are properly managed.
- Ensure that all program statutory requirements and reports are adhered to and completed.
Qualifications- Post-graduate university degree.
- AFDA employs candidates in line with the Employment Equity Act and as such preference will be given to suitably qualified candidates from designated groups.
Academic and professional standing- Demonstrated established reputation as reflected by an extensive and productive research record or an exceptional level of strategic and managerial achievement as a professional in a relevant discipline.
- Knowledge of professional and industry issues and trends in areas relevant to the Institution.
Personal attributes and skill set- Demonstrated ability to provide leadership through guiding, inspiring and influencing staff in the achievement of the core activities of an organization.
- Highly developed interpersonal skills and the proven respect of peers as a person and a leader.
- Proven capacity to foster constructive debate and consensus, to engage the enthusiasm and earn the respect of colleagues, and to act with civility and integrity at all times.
- Skills in the strategic management of finances, staff and facilities, and the capacity to plan strategically and consultatively to position the campus strongly within the Institution and beyond.
- An understanding of the broader national and international context of higher education and the business, government and industry context in which graduates will work.
- A thorough knowledge and understanding of the principles underpinning anti-discrimination, student equity, occupational health and safety and all other relevant legislation, and a demonstrated commitment and capacity to implement the principles and plans for equal opportunity, student equity, affirmative action and occupational health and safety.
