New commercial broadcasting licences for secondary markets

The secondary markets of the Free State and Eastern Cape Provinces have received licences to provide commercial broadcasting services. The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) officially announced this on 3 February 2014.
New commercial broadcasting licences for secondary markets

Though the ITA stipulated that only one licence would be issued to the successful applicant in the Northern Cape Province, two licences would be issued to the successful applicants in the Free State Province and one licence would be issued to the successful applicant in the Eastern Cape Province; no application was received for the Northern Cape Province.

The authority believes that this licensing process will go a long way in providing commercial broadcasting services that will meet the demand for the proposed broadcasting service within the proposed licence area and the need for the proposed broadcasting service within such licence area. Furthermore, it will bring about choice of broadcasting services as well as promote investment in the licenced area.
