The rise of black start-ups and social entrepreneurship in South Africa
With tough economic times and unemployment rising in an ever-changing world that is becoming more democratised, it is no surprise that there is a rise in black start-ups and social entrepreneurship. The future of the cellular industry
When cellular services first hit the South African market 21 years ago, it was all about chasing new connections. The race was on to sign up as many subscribers as possible. Today, that race is run and the telecommunications industry, if it wants a future, has to look at innovating its brands as never before. What could that look like on the mobile landscape? 5 Feb 2016 Read more >>

What do netiquette, reputation and security have in common?
A relatively new phenomenon, social media developed rapidly without a code of conduct to guide behaviour. The bullying, harassment and hate speech ubiquitous online, is reminiscent of human history at a time when barbaric tribes raped, pillaged and conquered the next-door village, often for differences in opinion. Base instinct ruled, serving the important purpose of survival and expansion. As we evolved, our needs changed, we developed manners and etiquette to control instinctual behaviour. Some argue that the online world has caused regression in our social conduct. 6 Jan 2016 Read more >>

Cybercrime - protect yourself
Security software, processes and systems are not enough to beat cybercriminals. They're clever, they're focused and they have time. South Africa is one of only 28 countries to have a cyber-security policy in place, but it is widely criticised. We have been victim to the most cyber-attacks on the continent this year, and we lose in excess of R2.2bn to internet fraud and phishing attacks annually, according to the South African Banking Risk Information Centre. Cybercrime, overall, costs the country around R5.8bn annually. Just recently we've seen hackers getting into the accounts of UK mobile users' accounts to access their bank sort codes and details. 27 Nov 2015 Read more >>

Our youth are marching to the beat of a new drum
I teach part-time at AAA and one of my lectures is always on youth. One of the most passionate discussions we have is whether today's teenagers, students and first-jobbers have a cause - whether they have anything they care about enough, to look up from their smartphones/chats and disrupt their daily lives. Business transformation: The value of human capital
The telecommunications industry, particularly mobile telecoms, has been under severe pressure in the last few years, leading to consolidation in the independent service provider niche. The catalyst came in 2013 when telecoms regulator ICASA decided to cut termination rates - the fees that operators charge to carry each other's calls. This sparked a price war and analysts predicted, unsurprisingly, that the situation was unsustainable. As operators squeezed margins and cut incentives to their service providers, the two independent players in the market, Altech Autopage and Nashua Mobile, felt the pinch from every angle. When the pressure forced Nashua out, Autopage bought a portion of its subscriber base. Continued industry and consumer deflationary pressures then led Altron to make the decision to dispose of Autopage's subscriber base a year later. 2 Sep 2015 Read more >>
