In SA, Famous Brands produces 265,000 cups of specially blended coffee a day. With 2,175 restaurants, the company, whose brands include Wimpy, Steers and Mugg & Bean, also makes 77m ice-cream cones a year. It's the big daddy of SA franchising, with a R9,7bn market capitalisation, and it wants to repeat its local success in the rest of Africa.

Tourism growth outlook looks strong

Auditing firm PwC on Thursday (13 June) projected total room revenue in SA would grow at a compound annual rate of 9.2% between now and 2017 after overall spending on rooms in all categories rose by 13.4% in 2012 to R15.2bn‚ reflecting an increase in stay-unit nights and a 5.3% rise in the average room rate.

SA, Zimbabwe to benefit from US$60m hotel expansion

African Sun Limited announced on Tuesday, 8 September 2009, its expansion plans for its local and Zimbabwe operations to meet the influx of fans for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Totalling US$ 60 million, it will raise the hospitality group's capacity to 8500 rooms by 2012 from the current 3000 rooms.

Innscor's brands caught in a storm

Zimbabwe's retail giant, Innscor Africa, which runs a boutique of franchised fast food outlets across the country, is experiencing a brand crisis due to declining standards. This emerged from court documents following the arrest, made by immigration authorities, of Omer Rouben an Israel national recruited to head its brand loyalty division and revitalise the faltering brands.
